Open Source to the Rescue (2)

My first attempts to set-up the USB-Key to my satisfaction needed a good dose of patience. I needed the keyboard to be set-up for the Canadian bilingual version and an easy method for switching to and from  the US keyboard and the French keyboard with accentuated letters.

I also needed the Cloud components working (all the Google stuff plus whatever else dispensed with the needed for local disk storage and therefore backups) and I also wanted to have a full OpenOffice.org suite capable of saving to the USB Key just in case when absolutely required. In the end I got this and many extras. Since I didn't have a hard disk in my machine, I got rid of the install to disk option and added unetbootin so that I could download any one of a number of Linux distros in turn to the 4GB USB key which would then be burned to CD or DVD.

Plus I added dosemu (DOS emulation for Linux) so that I could load and run that bilingual small business management system we used to run at Futur Byte under Uniflex in 1984. Then came the System T, the management information system of concern. and a desktop link to the browser so that System T's reports could be printed to screen and e-mailed out to the personnel responsible for management functions.

So in the end I got the benefits of using this up-to-the-minute Linux edition designed as a Cloud client and all the benefits intended for a normal desktop user.
